The early years
NZ Wool Group was founded in 1976. Since then, we’ve grown and evolved, and today we’ve solidified our operations in Napier and Christchurch, supplying customers across New Zealand and around the world.

The famous stone press
As we started out, our hardworking water press did the compressing of our wool bales. But by the mid 1980s, we were growing and needed a new machine that really did the business. So we had a bespoke stone press designed and built here in Napier. The result was a machine of truly advanced capabilities, able to exert up to 700 tons of high-density pressure and setting a new benchmark of production and efficiency for the local wool industry.

Helping the neighbours
Before long, our press caught the attention of the Aussies, and was freighted over the ditch where we taught them how to use it. Luckily, we got it back in the early 1990s and it’s been onwards and upwards ever since. We’re very proud of our stone wool press. It’s a symbol of our innovation and adaptability that has played a big part in our success over the years, and still does today.
